When you watch birds, what is it that excites you? One of the things I love to watch (and photograph) is birds taking a bath. Here are a few images I made this year, of our fine feathered friends ... getting "undirty".
This first bird is an exceptionally beautiful bird, the male Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris):
Then a female Painted Bunting stopped by:
Next up, a Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) female:
Followed by a male Northern Cardinal, who almost takes an "upside-down" bath:
A little later, a Black-crested Titmouse (Baeolophus atricristatus), which happened to be a "lifer" for me that day, stopped by to clean up:
One of the "best" birds to visit the waterhole for a quick bath was this thrasher, a Long-billed Thrasher (Toxostoma longirostre). I debated long and hard for an ID on this guy ... may be a Curve-billed Thrasher (Toxostoma curvirostre) ... what do you think?
So, if you are out exploring new areas and happen upon a waterhole, sit tight and watch ... maybe some dirty birds will stop by for you!

I would call the thrasher a Long-billed. The streaks on the breast are too bold and dark for a Curve-billed Thrasher. Cool post!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tim! Also appreciate the ID info ... the streaks were what pointed me towards the long-billed, too.
DeleteWonderful post Jim. It is always fun to watch them bathe, and you got super shots.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dan!
DeleteJim great pictures, so many nice birds, I have to wait till April to see cardinals again. thanks
ReplyDeleteThanks, James! Fortunately, we have tons of cardinals at my home during the winter. I've counted as many as 35 at a time, either at the feeders or in trees waiting their turn! Just love them :o)
