Spring is a very busy time of year for baby birds. Baby birds that are about to leave their nest are called Fledglings. Their feathers aren’t fully developed and they just kind of flutter around from branch to branch. Sometimes they will be on the ground, but don’t be alarmed as this is part of the process of leaving the nest. Unless the fledgling is injured or vulnerable, you should never interfere or pick it up. It’s also important to remember that many species of birds nest on the ground.Seeing a bird fledge is something that you rarely get a glimpse of. What an exciting spring it has been for me. I have been fortunate enough to photograph so many different species of birds and their offspring this season, including Pileated Woodpeckers, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Bluebirds, Chickadees and many more.

ReplyDeleteFunny how some bird chicks are adorable, like ducklings, goslings, and most game birds for that matter. Song birds usually aren't quite so "cute".
ReplyDeleteWonderful photograph! It's my favorite time of year when so many fledglings appear. Currently, our property is very noisy with youngsters begging for food from the parents.
