This past month has not had a lot of birding due to life's other demands, but when I have been out, I have had some especially good days. Due to time constraints, I have stuck with my local patch, and it really does not disappoint. I have had several occasions now where a Red-Tail Hawk (not sure if the same one) has landed on a tree nearby and has allowed close looks and approaches. I would rather not spook a bird and stay back, but this bird likes to sit in a tree near the road where cars drive by as well as people jog/walk and I knew it was not too shy. Along with some decent lighting, I have also started to feel comfortable with my camera in full manual mode, which has allowed me to get much better photos. This bird on two seperate occasions allowed me to sit 20 feet away and watch it for 30 minutes each time. It seemed unconcerned and would preen and keep an eye on the meadow for prey (a guess).

Your experiences with this bird are wonderful Dan. I love it when a bird shows this much comfort with a person nearby. It shows that you weren't making the bird nervous at all.

ReplyDeleteBrilliant photos Dan.
ReplyDeleteWow, how fortunate that you were able to get so close! Fantastic photographs! The forth image shows beautifully why it is named a Red-tailed Hawk. Love the fifth shot with the feathers blowing in the wind. Outstanding!
