Gilbert Water Ranch: Northern Shoveler

When I see them, they are so often in large numbers that their beauty is often overlooked.
I was amazed at the hue of blue in the head and the color of green in the tail feathers.
The females are, like other ducks, plain.  Yet that big ol' schnoz makes it easily identifiable.
Those yellow eyes, orange legs, and black bill...more colors on one bird than I expected.

  1. The Water Ranch always has such good birds. I need to get back there next time I make it down to Arizona. I think I saw something like 40 species in one hour last time.

  2. I remember seeing great flocks of these at Sweetwater Wetlands in Tucson!
