One of the things that I am really enjoying about bird photography, is the chance to look at a bird closer and longer in a still image. The feather structure and color patterns are amazing, and more abundant than I imagined. You can see bristles around the beak and other details that you otherwise miss while looking through binoculars. Bill shape, size and color, and eye shape and color are so impressive when enjoyed with a close-up and zoomed in photo.
I only have three words to describe these photos Robert, gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!
The raptors would have to be my favorites, especially that first shot of the Sharpy! Wow!
I imagine some of these were birds in the hand at Idaho Bird Observatory?
You are definitely right about being able to study the bird more closely with a good still photo. I often see things in my photos after downloading them to the computer that I never even saw out in the field. Photographing birds is a great way to document what you are seeing.
I agree with the other comments - those are great photos! I really like the Hummingbird but I think that's because we don't have any out here in Australia.
Yowsers! You have some incredible close-ups here. Just beautiful!! I agree....I love looking at stills. I learn some much about feathers and details. The Sharp-shinned close-up is incredible...they all are!
Now those are some beautiful pictures. Love them.

All of the photos are great, but the one of the sharp shinned hawk is amazing! Sharp, clear, you can see right into the bird's eye!
ReplyDeleteI also liked the Virginia Rail. I have never seen one up close.
Thanks.

ReplyDeleteThanks for all the kind comments guys.
ReplyDeleteLarry is correct. A few of these were birds in the hand at the Idaho Bird Observatory that I have recycled and cropped down from a previous post.
Wowees! Great close ups!
ReplyDeleteAll gorgeous photos- wow! I stared at that first one for a while, taking it all in.

ReplyDeleteAwesome images. Were you banding or observing?
ReplyDeleteThx Zen Birdfeeder! I was assisting in the banding of the hawks and just observing the banding of the song birds.
ReplyDeletea great collection of portraits of the birds. :)
ReplyDeleteI love those close-ups and Warbling Vireo is an all time favourite, so understated
ReplyDelete@NatureFootstep Thanks for the kind compliment.
ReplyDelete@Phil - ah, you British know how to appreciate the understated, even if you spell favorite in a strange way.
You are getting really good!
